Whitelaw Hotel Apartments
Washington, DC
Built-in 1919, The Whitelaw Hotel was the first African American apartment-hotel in Washington, DC, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The project required a complete interior restoration and rehabilitation of the original building. In keeping with the historic 1919 plan, the Park Service required the new design of the first floor to closely parallel the original circulation pattern and maintain its visual emphasis on the main ballroom. The design goal for the upper floors was to eliminate wasted corridor space while taking advantage of the opportunities for unique apartment designs and views. The main ballroom involved the full restoration of the Italian Renaissance Revival plasterwork and wood partition system.
